I have had a Samsung Optimus for approximately two years.  It is powered by Android and runs on a 3G network.  My Optimus allows me to do all things an average college kid wishes to do. I can check Facebook, update Twitter, surf the internet, and call/text individuals.  The Optimus is, in my opinion, one of the best Android operated phones.
The Optimus is very lightweight which makes it easier to transport.  The sleek, thin design with the large screen makes it simple to hold and view material on the phone.  It is equipped with WIFI, so if the 3G network is operating slowly, you can switch to an available network and still surf the web with ease.  The Optimus has a pre-installed GPS for no extra charge.  The GPS gives you turn by turn directions and even displays Google Maps upon request. For entertainment, Google’s Play Store app is also pre-installed, which gives access to hundreds of apps, with the most recent being “Temple Run” – a game made popular by Apple.
A phone similar to the Optimus is the Samsung Intercept.  Unlike the Optimus, the Intercept is bulky and heavy.  Many of the apps that are pre-installed on the Optimus are also available on the Intercept.  The major differences between the Optimus and Intercept are speed and functionality.  There is a delay on the Intercept.  It takes double the time to download apps than with the Optimus.  If forced to do more than one task at a time, the Intercept will freeze and forceclose.
When shopping for cell phones, people need to keep in mind what function the phone will serve for them.  I use my Optimus for an alarm clock, an mp3 player, an organizer, and a communicator.  In my opinion, the Optimus only has minimal capabilities when compared to other phones such as the iPhone and Windows 7 Phone, but it suits me because I do not have a need for extra functions.  I do not recommend the Optimus for business people.  The Optimus is not a good source for gmail, it cannot access Microsoft Office, nor does it have apps such as Skype of FaceTime.  However, I do recommend it for people in high school, college, and anyone who wants a simple phone equipped with Android capabilities.
